Emergency preparedness briefing highlights earthquake damage and Ebola readiness

Nanaimo is working on a plan to gauge damage to buildings in the immidiate aftermath of an earthquake.

Council got an Emergency Management briefing this week.

The City has held 6 emergency response this year, most recently the Great BC Shakeout.

Karen Lindsay, the Emergency Program Manager, says they used that opportunity to develop a rapid damage assessment program, through the building inspection division.

Lindsay says they’ll be adding to that program in the new year.

Council also got a briefing on the City’s readiness in the unlikely event an Ebola case turns up in the area.

The main points were:

  • Island Health and the BC Ambulance Service are the lead agencies for Ebola.
  • The City has been involved in meetings over the last several weeks to discuss procedures and protocols related to Ebola. Representatives involved include the BC Ambulance Service, Island Health, Fire, Police, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and City of Nanaimo Emergency Management staff.
  • There are five designated hospitals identified in British Columbia for treatment of confirmed or suspected cases of Ebola. The closest facility to Nanaimo is located in Victoria.
