A man is facing kidnapping charges after a woman thwarted an attempted abduction early this morning in Nanaimo.
Around 12:30am, the 39-year-old was giving two men a ride home from a social function in the North end. After dropping off one of the men, the other attacked her by punching and choking her.
Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien says the man told her to drive to a secluded area.
O’Brien says the suspect took off again, allegedly sideswiping a police car and two other cars. He got into an accident at Vancouver Island University and ran away from the scene. Police dogs were brought in to track him down and found him hiding in some bushes. The 43-year-old man resisted arrest and was bitten in the arm. He was treated at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
The victim was traumatized by the incident and was also treated at NRGH for scrapes, bruises and swelling from the attack.
The man hasn’t been charged yet but could be facing a range of offenses including kidnapping, assault causing bodily harm, fleeing police and a variety of driving offenses. He will be appearing in court on Wednesday, May 7.
“The recent acts of violence in Nanaimo, while devastating to those affected, have been targeted acts. In each, the response delivered by our officers has been efficient and effective, leading to the arrest of the persons believed responsible ” says Nanaimo RCMP Detachment Commander Superintendent Mark Fisher.
