Port Alberni woman killed while walking along Hwy 19

RCMP in Oceanside say a 35-year-old Port Alberni woman is dead after an accident on Highway 19. It happened around 4:45pm on Monday afternoon.

She was hit by a transport truck while she was walking in the northbound slow lane, near the intersection with Highway 4 between Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Her car was parked on the side of the road.

Cpl. Michael Elston with Central Island Traffic Services says the driver of the tractor trailer has been cooperating with the investigation and wasn’t at fault.

Alcohol and speed have both been ruled out as contributing to the accident. The RCMP are working with the Coroners Service on the investigation. The woman’s name has not been released.

Highway 19 was closed for several hours while investigators worked at the scene.  RCMP are still looking for any witnesses.  They should call Cst. Doug Pennington of Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services at (250) 248-6111.
