Restored passenger rail service may not be commuter friendly

Another twist in the tale of passenger rail on Vancouver Island.

People pushing for an E&N comeback have touted it as a commuter train to Victoria.

Rail advocate, and newly elected Port Alberni councillor Chris Alemany got a tentative schedule for service between Nanaimo and Victoria through Access to Information. But it doesn’t seem commuter friendly.

It has a train out of Nanaimo at 6:30 in the morning, arriving in Victoria at 9 with the last return trip leaving Victoria at 2:45.

It’s part of a Train Service Agreement between VIA and Southern Rail.

Alemany says that means the schedule is at least open to change.  Alemany also says he remains optimistic that passenger trains will soon be rolling again on the Island, and he’s looking forward to using his new role as a city councillor to help make it happen.
