BC Ferrries says a mechanical problem was behind delays on the Langdale – Horseshoe Bay route Tuesday, and it could take the rest of the week to fix.
Ferries says one of the Queen of Surrey’s controllable pitch propellers has been malfunctioning.
Deborah Marshall says the company is trying to get a replacement part. “We will know tomorrow (Wed) morning the ETA for the part,” she says. “At this point, Engineering is telling us it could be 3 – 4 days.”
While the vessel is safe to operate, it has to operate at reduced speed.
BC Ferries has put a modified schedule of seven round trips in place starting Wednesday morning.
The Earls Cove – Saltery Bay schedule has also been changed to make sure connections can still be made.
Marshall also says they did consider bringing in a replacement for the Surrey, but the Cowichan, Alberni, Spirit of Vancouver Island and Coastal Renaissance are all undergoing refits – making potential replacement vessels hard to come by.
