NLSF says uncertainty over school slowing "Stock the Lockers" donations. YCMA ready to open Camp Elphinstone if strike continues

Parents and students are still waiting to hear if school will start as scheduled in 2 weeks…
And the uncertainty has many parents looking for options.  The YMCA says it’s ready to open Camp Elphinstone for day camps aimed at kids between 5 and 12 if the schools are still behind picket lines.
Kelly Walker of the Y says they’re planning to charge between 35 dollars a day (with an extra $8 for transportation and $5 for before and after care if needed) to try to match the government’s offer of a 40 dollar a day subsidy.
Walker says they’re not registering kids yet, but they have set up a waiting list (parents can get on the list by calling 604-939-9622)
The uncertainty is also making for a slower than usual start to the Nanaimo Ladysmith Schools Foundation’s “Stock the Lockers” campaign.
They’re hoping to raise 50-thousand dollars, and Executive Director Erin Van Steen says although donations are down they’re still confident of meeting that goal.  She also says they have to be ready to help students in need with supplies no matter when classes start.
Donations are accepted at Staples, Coastal Community Credit Unions or at NLSF.ca
